Our planners finally start today - so be looking for these to come home. As a reminder, students are expected to have you initial their planner Friday and record reading minutes. I will check these Monday morning. Also, by Thursday of this week ( Aug.11), students need to have chosen and start reading the book they have chosen for their book report. Reading will need to be completed before coming back on track in September. I will send details of how to complete the book report home soon - but remember to save cardboard cereal boxes!!!
This week, we will not have a homework packet. I want students to get an extra head start in reading the book for their book report and make sure to study for spelling and vocabulary tests for Friday. Our vocabulary word are more difficult this week. Words are less familiar and many of the definitions are similar.
Vocabulary Words:
descent - a trip down into or from something, such as a mountain
trekked - made a slow and difficult journey on foot
belay - being tied to a person or rock with a rope for safety
harness - a set of straps that can attach to a safety rope
ledge - a shelf of rock
rappel - to come down a cliff by sliding down a rope
This week we will begin our high frequency words in spelling groups. Your students should know which spelling group they are in. There will be 25 words this week, but most of the words should already by mastered by students. Please be sure students understand the meaning of the word, as several of them are homophones. Any words students miss will be put on their list of words to master. We will do this next week as well. The next week we will begin 5 high frequency words (5 words they cannot spell) and 10 pattern words.
